Humble Beginnings


Sula Vineyards was founded by Rajeev Samant started selling wines in 2000. Rajeev, who had a vision to establish his own venture, recognised the ideal climate for growing wine grapes in Nashik, India. He decided to start his venture in Nashik, Maharashtra, which has an ideal climate for growing grapes. With the help of famous winemaker Kerry Damskey, Rajeev took the bold step of growing wine grapes in the Nashik region.Because of him many farmers in Nashik started growing grapes in thei region. Today, Nashik is biggest exporter of grapes. They introduced varietals such as Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc, previously unheard of in India.


Overcoming Challenges


Introducing wine to Indian customers was a significant Big challenge, as it was primarily associated with foreigners and the elite people who used to enjoy wine. Initially, Sula faced difficulties in obtaining licences and marketing their wines. In India, it is not allowed to advertise alcohol or tobacco products directly. However, Rajeev’s determination led him to farm on his family land in Nashik, sourcing labourers and raw materials locally. As Indian wines was unknown and more and more expensive it was hard to create space in Huge competative market.


Focus on Quality


Rajeev distinguished Sula Vineyards by focusing on quality of its wines. Chaitanya Rathi, the COO, credits their success to time, patience, and a hunger for profitable growth in a measured manner. In wine industry, patience is the key to success. Because After planting the wine grapes, it takes a year to grow. When grapes are fully grown, they are processed into raw grape juice. It takes almost two years to convert into wine. Unlike the prevalent “growth-at-all-costs” approach in today’s startup ecosystem, Sula Vineyards remained committed to manufacturing superior-quality wines.


Manufacturing Process


Making or Crafting wine is a labor-intensive process at. First Grapes are Grown in field which takes huge effort to make quality grapes. The grapes are handpicked and collected, then they are crushed and transfer to filtering tanks. The fermentation process in these tanks converts sugar into alcohol. Depending on the desired wine style (red, white, or rosé), the grape juice undergoes specific processing. White wine requires only the juice, while red wine utilizes the whole grape, including the skinand seeds. In 2019, Sula Vineyards sold over one million cases of wine, commanding a 65 percent market share in the domestic wine market.

Sula Vineyards introduced innovative marketing strategies, They introduced wine tasting events and vineyard tours, to establish direct connections with customers. The creation of a tasting room and the annual SulaFest event attracted a growing number of visitors to the vineyards. This wine tourism not only contributed to Sula’s success but also put Nashik on the map as a wine destination. Today Nashik is wine capital of India. The Impact of COVID-19 and Future Prospects: Like many businesses, Sula Vineyards faced challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, with sales and production completely stoped. But sula Vineyards acknowledges the government’s efforts to contain the spread of the virus. They believes that the beer and wine industry’s growth can be increased by government but sees hope in initiatives like the goods and services tax (GST) and home delivery of liquor.
